The UK Parliament is one of the oldest representative
assemblies in the world. The site of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament is still
referred to as the Palace of Westminster, a royal palace and former residence of kings.
The site was used as a royal residence until Henry VIII moved the royal family out in 1512
following a fire. The layout of the Palace is intricate, with its existing buildings
containing nearly 1,200 rooms, 100 staircases and well over 3 kilometers (2 miles) of
passages. Among the original historic buildings is Westminster Hall, used nowadays for
major public ceremonial events.
Big Ben
At 9'-0" diameter, 7'-6" high, and
weighing in at (13,760 Kg),13 tons 10 cwts 3 qtrs 15lbs, the hour bell of the Great Clock
of Westminster - known worldwide as 'Big Ben' - is the most famous bell ever to be cast at
the Whitechapel Bell Foundry
The Clock Faces
The clock faces were once the largest four-faced clock
in the world, but have since been outdone by the Allen-Bradley Clock Tower in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. The builders of the Allen-Bradley Clock Tower did not add chimes to the clock,
so the Great Clock of Westminster could still hold the title of the "world's largest
four-faced chiming clock." The clock mechanism itself was completed by 1854, but the
tower was not fully constructed until four years later in 1858.
